Eight of the Top 10 Schools in Illinois are in the City of Chicago

A major factor for many families when relocating is picking an area with a well-performing school. In a recent report done by U.S. News, of the top 10 performing high schools in Illinois, 8 are within the city limits of Chicago. That list includes:

  • Walter Payton College Preparatory High School: 1st in Illinois, 52nd in the nation
  • Northside College Preparatory High School: 2nd in Illinois, 82nd in the nation
  • Lane Technical College Prep High School: 3rd in Illinois, 112th in the nation
  • Phoenix Military Academy High School: 4th in Illinois, 122nd in the nation
  • Jones College Prep High School 5th in Illinois, 124th in the nation
  • Whitney M. Young Magnet High School: 6th in Illinois, 140th in the nation
  • Lincoln Park High School: 9th in Illinois, 324th in the nation
  • Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy: 10th in Illinois, 345th in the nation

This list presents schools ranging from neighborhoods as far North as North Park to the far south on 111th St. The top performing schools listed within the city are also CPS Selective Enrollment schools, offering opportunities for students from communities throughout the city limits to test and enroll in nationally high ranked institutions. Northside College Prep and Walter Payton, both ranked within the top 100 schools nationally numbering at #82 and #52 respectively. Brooks gained a Gold rating for its exceptional performance in state required tests and college readiness, placing in the 96th percent for AP testing participation.

In a recent press release on the report, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson and Board of Education President Frank M. It is significant, yet not surprising, that CPS represents most of the best schools in Illinois and is among the ranks of the greatest schools in the country. These schools represent just a sampling of the many high quality schools that are raising the bar for success and leading education experts across the nation to take notice of Chicago’s progress.”
